I don’t remember where the drop off is for toobing, but it does *not* run right past the grist mill or through the center of Gruene. Of course, being an old grist mill, the view of the river is spectacular. It also has a two story general store (if I remember right it has the old tin ceilings), an ice cream parlor, and an old grist mill that has been turned into a restaurant. Kids play on the tire swings and trees out back while the adults socialize at the picnic tables (no, really, they actually talk to each other!).

It has no a/c, wood floors, and screens and wooden shutters for windows (no glass). They have had some of the biggest names in music play there live.

As noted above, it has the oldest dance hall in Texas, which is packed full on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. Gruene is strictly a tourist town, and the rates reflect it. We are sorry that we did not contribute our positive thoughts sooner, but we will add, as an aside, that we recently visited with a young couple who experienced the lunch menu-they raved about the food and felt happy that the lunch prices were a good value. This is in New Braunfels, not in Gruene proper. The prices are exactly what we expect to pay for a special evening out, for a unique atmosphere, for a deliciously prepared meal, and for polite service. Our out-of-town guest is generally difficult to please (he prefers fine dining), and Silo House was the right choice to pamper our guest-he was totally impressed and completely satisfied. not bring a bottle of wine, which did not matter as the tea and water were also to our liking. The appetizers, seafood, steak, and dessert were perfect. Also, if you enjoy quiet conversation, rather than the racket of loud, annoying music that most establishments assault your ears with-this is your place. Silo House is the perfect spot to celebrate a special occasion. I feel so badly that I can't remember our servers name, but I remember Tamara and Whitney made it so special. The servers sang for me and were so very sweet.

Dessert was tuxedo cake, and like the other reviewers said, was decadent and completely lovely. We shared a side of Cheesy Cauliflower and the Silo House potatoes, because the sides were large! We also had the "flight" of a local brew house's offerings. It was so tender I could cut it with a butter knife, NO LIE! My cousin had the lamb chops, and she said she has never had better either. And for good reason! This was the best steak I have ever eaten in my life. First, let me tell you, that I am not a vegetarian, but I really could care less about eating meat of any kind in recent years, but I love and trust my cousin.

I have the steak, she said I would enjoy it. (I'm a fat girl, and this guy can cook!!! By the way, so can his wife!) My cousin took me out for my birthday, and insisted. I simply cannot tell you how much I loved this restaurant! Chef Mike Hennessy is my new best friend.
